The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly considering cutting ties with running back Dalvin Cook before the 2023 NFL Draft, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. While the team has talked to at least one team about a trade in the past, it looks like a release is more likely, with the Vikings looking to save money. Trading Cook before June 1 would save the team $7.89 million, while cutting him before that date would result in savings of $5.89 million.
The Miami Dolphins have been suggested as a possible landing spot for Cook, but the Vikings are still searching for a trade partner. If Cook is released, though, Miami could negotiate a deal with the running back, who has been a standout performer in the league, averaging 86.6 rushing yards per game – fourth among active running backs.
The Dolphins have been active in the offseason, retaining running backs Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., Myles Gaskin, and Salvon Ahmed. While Mostert set a new career-high in rushing yards last year, Miami struggled on the ground, ranking No. 27 with 96 yards per game.
Despite the strength of their current running back unit, history suggests that Miami general manager Chris Grier could look to make another position group great. Grier has previously made the cornerback and receiving groups great by adding Jalen Ramsey and trading for Tyreek Hill, respectively.
However, Coach Mike McDaniel has expressed excitement about having both Mostert and Wilson on the team, calling them two of the franchise’s strongest character contributors. Whether the Dolphins ultimately make a move for Cook or not, the team will be looking to improve their running game in 2021.
