The Fifth Quarter’s Analysis of Broncos’ Upcoming Season
With a history of maintaining high performance, the Broncos have set the benchmark high, achieving at least 10 victories in six seasons beginning 2014. To maintain this streak, the current season demands winning the Mountain West championship game, or a bowl game, or frankly, both. Their nonconference schedule and a few tricky league games make the task even harder this year.
The Challenges Ahead
A crucial road game at Memphis on September 30 appears to be inevitable for achieving double-digit victories for Boise State. Moreover, Broncos are set to face a tough line-up during the final legs of the season. This includes a home game against Wyoming on October 28 and a road trip to Fresno State on November 4, both of which have a potential to be nail-biting games.
Wyoming is a force to be reckoned with, boasting perhaps the strongest defensive front seven in the Mountain West region, led by none other than linebacker Easton Gibbs- the preseason defensive player of the year as voted by conference media members. Last season, Gibbs led the conference with an impressive 121 tackles. Wyoming also houses three of the league’s best defensive linemen: Cody Godbout, Jordan Bertagnole, and Devonne Harris.
The Fresno Stalemate
Fresno State would also prove to be formidable opponents since they’d be filling the vacancies of key players including quarterback Jake Haener. However, former UCF quarterback Mikey Keene is expected to fill in his shoes quite snugly. Notably, he’s more athletic than Haener and already shows excellent command over his offense. Moreover, Fresno State has the top Mountain West defenders in their crew including Leveille Bailey and Cam Lockridge.
Final Hurdles
The final regular season game would see Boise State up against Air Force at home. Air Force was ranked second by conference media members, making it a daunting challenge for the Broncos. However, the Broncos remain hopeful boasting a 7-4 all-time record against the Falcons. Although Air Force has recently lost the conference’s leading rusher (Brad Roberts) and their starting quarterback Haaziq Daniels, they’ve done a solid job in reloading their front line.
The Predictions
With such a tight schedule, the Broncos’ formidably anticipated regular-season closure is predicted at 9-3, with losses possibly at Wyoming, Fresno State or Air Force. This could set them up for the championship against the Falcons, the outcome of which is anyone’s guess. Moving to a bowl, a 10-4 record seems achievable once again for the Broncosby the end of the season.
