This week, ESPN college football analyst Bill Connelly released his updated SP+ preseason projections.

Connelly’s SP+ formula relies on advanced metrics. His preseason rankings run on three different categories: returning production, recruiting and recent history.

The SEC is loaded with teams high on the list. The conference accounts for 40% of the top 10. Here’s a look where these SEC teams have landed:

The Top 3 in the SEC

  • 2) Alabama
  • 3) Georgia
  • 8)Texas A&M

While returning production doesn’t work out in Georgia or Alabama’s favor, those programs continue to reload. Even with Georgia losing 15 highly talented players to the NFL Draft, one would be crazy not to pick the Bulldogs as a national title contender again.

Alabama and Georgia have continued to recruit elite talent, and their recent history doesn’t show a future that will darken any time soon. Texas A&M had the No. 1 recruiting class in 2022, with a roster that is built to win. It will be up to head coach Jimbo Fisher and staff to see if they can meet top-10 expectations.

The Surprise

  • 9) Tennessee

Twenty-four years is a long time for a college football sleeping giant to slumber. That’s how long it’s been since the Volunteers’ national championship season of 1998. Josh Heupel had a solid year one as head coach, and many project the Volunteers to build on that success.

In the comments below, let us know your thoughts on Tennessee being in the top 10.

Best of the Rest

20) Kentucky
