Troy football coach Jon Sumrall has agreed to a new contract through the 2026 season, according to a report by ESPN. Sumrall’s new deal will also include an increased salary, more funds allocated for staff salaries, and program investments for players.
The 40-year-old coach led the Trojans to a 12-2 record and the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2022, his first season as a head coach. He was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award.
Sumrall made $825,000 in 2022, according to USA Today’s Coaches Salary database.
Troy has not officially announced Sumrall’s new contract, though an announcement could come as early as next week.
Troy’s linebackers coach Tayler Polk was also given a new role on the coaching staff. Polk will now hold the title of co-defensive coordinator. Sumrall praised Polk, having “really high regard for his knowledge of the game, his relationship with his players and the energy he brings to everything he does.”
Troy hired Greg Gasparato last month as defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Gasparato replaced Shiel Wood, who was hired as defensive coordinator at Tulane.
Troy has completed its second week of spring practice and is scheduled to hold its annual T-Day spring game on April 15.
Sumrall’s new contract is a sign of Troy’s commitment to their coach and their confidence in his ability to lead the team. With the Trojans coming off a successful 2022 season, they are looking to continue their success under Sumrall’s leadership for years to come.
