The 128 Team Playoff, Day 112: Virginia vs. Texas Tech

Introduction

We’ve created a 130-team bracket using ESPN’s FPI as our ranking system.

“But, anyone can create a bracket, how will the games be simulated?” Great question; NCAA Game Sim was used.

For each game on the bracket, the matchup was simulated once and every day a write-up will be done.

For the matchup, player statistics will be simulated and included in the write-ups.

Finally, thanks to the NCAA Game Sim premium membership, we’ll show the results of doing 100 simulations all at once. This is to see if a given result was more towards the expected side or if a given result was more towards the upset or luckier side.

All of the results have been simulated and tabulated, so at the time of writing the introduction, the results are already in.

This is designed to be fun, so please enjoy.

From Georgia to Massachusetts, here’s the 130-team bracket:

Match 113

(6) Virginia vs. (7) Texas Tech

How Virginia Got Here: 35-28 win over (11) Georgia Tech, 47-17 win over (3) Ole Miss

How Texas Tech Got Here: 58-14 win over (10) Central Michigan, 20-16 win over (2) Baylor

We’ve mentioned a couple times during this tournament: You throw to score and run to win.

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong was 29-for-46 with 343 yards and three touchdowns.

Texas Tech quarterback Henry Colombi was 21-for-32 with 235 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks ran for 107 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Virginia’s leading rusher was Armstrong, who ran for 39 yards on 10 carries — not what the Cavaliers needed to cement the lead that it occasionally held.

Being able to run the ball and dominate time of possession gave Texas Tech a decided advantage. The Red Raiders win, 33-30.

In 100 simulations, each team won 50, with Texas Tech holding a slight 34.5-33.7 edge in points scored.

With Virginia’s loss, this leaves just Clemson remaining for the ACC.

Winner’s Next Matchup: (8) Maryland

Tomorrow’s Matchup: (3) Penn State vs. (10) Memphis
