The Texas Longhorns’ quarterback situation has become a lot more interesting with the arrival of Arch Manning, the nephew of two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. The top-rated recruit in the class of 2023 has already enrolled at Texas and is participating in spring practices.

However, Manning will have to compete with Quinn Ewers, who was the starting quarterback for Texas last season. Despite a rocky start as a true freshman, Ewers had some impressive moments, throwing for 2,177 yards and 15 touchdowns. But according to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, Ewers is not guaranteed the starting job, and the competition is open to all positions, including quarterback.

Sarkisian is hoping that the competition between Ewers and Manning will raise the level of play on the field, particularly in the passing game, which struggled last season. “That competition should ultimately drive the best out of both of them,” Sarkisian said. “That’s what we’re trying to create in our program at every position group. When you have that is when your level of play continually goes up and up.”

Sarkisian also praised Ewers’ progress this winter, saying that the young quarterback is much more comfortable in his second year with the program. Ewers’ infamous mullet may be gone, but Sarkisian said that there has been no marked change in his approach. The coach did note that appearance can alter how a person is perceived, and he and Ewers have discussed this issue.

As for Manning, he took second-team reps at Monday’s practice due to an injury to Maalik Murphy. Sarkisian said that Manning’s first practice was up-and-down, but he praised the freshman’s worker’s mentality and desire to improve.

Texas fans will have to wait until the season opener on September 2 to see who will start under center. Sarkisian has a 13-12 record in two seasons at Texas and will be looking to improve on that mark in 2023.
