As Week 6 starts, the G5 teams are starting to separate out. Almost half of college football (the G5) is battling for one NY6 Bowl bid. With only a handful of undefeated G5 teams left, the picture is starting to clear up. This week, we have a new #1 team in our G5 Power Rankings – a team that’s ranked for the first time since the NCAA gave them the “Death Penalty”.
The SMU Mustangs have finally returned to the AP Top 25 for the first time since October 1986. They have a P5 win over Gary Patterson and TCU – the Frog and Pony Show. They also boast a quality win over Arkansas State, and a solid road win in Tampa over USF. The Mustangs have a favorable schedule until they meet Memphis on November 2nd. Texas transfer QB Shane Buechele has done wonders for this team so far.
#2. Boise State
The win against Florida State is starting to look better and better. The question remains – are there any remaining teams who can challenge the Broncos? Boise State needs to continue cheering for FSU, as their strength of schedule rides on that opening win. Regardless, it has been an impressive season for Boise State and their true freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier.
Even with the loss against Pitt, UCF is still a very impressive team, with one of the most explosive offenses in the nation. A true test emerges this week as the Knights travel to Cincinnati.
Memphis comes into Week 6 with a perfect 4-0 record. Brady White and Kenneth Gainwell lead the Tigers to offensive success. Memphis must not overlook Louisiana-Monroe or the rest of their conference foes.
#5. Appalachian State
Eli Drinkwitz has the Mountaineers moving in the right direction. The former Boise and North Carolina State OC has the Mountaineers lighting up the scoreboard, which lead to a win over ACC foe UNC – the same UNC team that defeated South Carolina, Miami, and was one point away from #1 Clemson.
