New coach, new goals: USF Bulls face critical summer period

The USF Bulls are preparing for what could be their biggest summer ever, according to head coach Alex Golesh. With a new-coach buzz on campus, the Bulls sit at a pivotal point in their relatively young history. Golesh wants to validate the investment being made in the program, and the next four months are critical for the team.

While the Bulls aren’t in a dire situation, Friday’s spring game did not go as planned. The team looked like a 1-11 team with a first-time head coach. There were extenuating circumstances, but there is a lot of work to do. The offense was down five receivers who would be on the two-deep, and the unit was so thin that running back Kelley Joiner had to move to slot receiver. Joiner led the team with seven catches on ten targets for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Golesh pointed out that difficult conversations about players’ futures will be had over the next few days, which could lead to a lot of attrition. But expect a lot of additions as well. The Bulls will be very active once the transfer portal opens Saturday.

To succeed, the Bulls will have to build the kind of culture that Golesh believes is necessary. The team cannot focus on individual success but must work together to get USF back to where it belongs, at the top of the conference and in the national conversation. This summer will be a make-or-break period for the team, and Golesh knows it.

Overall, there is a lot of work to be done, and Golesh and his staff know that. But with a new-coach buzz and passion from fans, the Bulls have a real opportunity to turn things around. The next four months will determine the trajectory of the program, and fans should be excited to see what the team can accomplish.
