Ron Rivera Joins Raiders Coaching Search: What’s Next?

The Las Vegas Raiders have begun their search for a new head coach, and a notable candidate has emerged. Ron Rivera, the former head coach of the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders, is set to interview for the position.

Rivera’s coaching career features significant accomplishments. During his tenure with the Panthers from 2011 to 2019, he led the team to a respectable 76-63-1 regular-season record. Under his guidance, the Panthers clinched three NFC South titles and made four playoff appearances. Rivera received Coach of the Year accolades on two occasions.

The 2015 season stands out as Rivera’s hallmark year with the Panthers. He orchestrated a remarkable 15-1 record alongside quarterback Cam Newton, paving the way for an NFC Championship and a spot in Super Bowl 50. Despite the Super Bowl loss to the Denver Broncos, that season established Rivera as one of the league’s top coaches.

After parting ways with the Panthers late in the 2019 season, Rivera was hired by the Commanders in 2020. His time in Washington did not yield the same success as in Carolina. The best season came in 2020 when the team secured the NFC East title with a 7-9 record. Overall, Rivera concluded his tenure in Washington with a 26-40-1 record.

Rivera possesses familiarity with the AFC West, having previously served as the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers before taking over in Carolina.

The Raiders’ coaching search has included interviews with several prominent candidates. Among those are Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn from the Detroit Lions, Steve Spagnuolo from the Kansas City Chiefs, and Todd Monken of Baltimore. The franchise has also explored options with former Jets head coach Robert Saleh and current Denver and Seattle coaches, Vance Joseph and Pete Carroll.

As the search unfolds, Rivera’s extensive experience and track record in the league make him a compelling candidate for the Raiders’ head coaching vacancy. The outcome of these interviews could significantly shape the future of the franchise.
