With the transfer portal opening this month, the arms race to equip the best roster possible has begun. We all know one of the best things you could do for your roster is nail the quarterback position. Right now there are tons of college-ready Quarterbacks with huge experience. Take a look at my rankings for transfer portal QBs.
Transfer Portal QB Rankings
1. Grayson McCall
Former Team: Coastal Carolina
• McCall is my top Transfer Portal QB for a reason. He’s a Dual Threat who’s thrown for over 8,000 yards and has just 8 career INTs to 78 Passing TDs, he has an outstanding completion percentage of 70.4%. McCall has also rushed for 1,053 yards and 16 TDs. Whatever team gets Grayson automatically gets a Top 5-10 QB heading into 2023.
2. Devin Leary
Former Team: North Carolina State
• Leary when healthy can be a top 10 QB in CFB. If he finds the right fit he could lead someone to the CFB Playoff. In his career, he’s thrown for 6,807 yards and 62 TDs.
3. Hudson Card
Former Team: Texas
• Card is ranked #3 because of the potential I believe he has. In his career, he’s thrown for 1,523 yards and 11 TDs while completing 65.5% of his passes. If Card finds the right team I believe he could be in for a massive 2023 season.
4. Spencer Sanders
Former Team: Oklahoma State
• Sanders is a seasoned veteran who had a big career for the Cowboys. He’s capable of big games but he’s also turnover prone at times with 40 career INTs. In his career, he’s thrown for 9,553 yards 67 TDs, and rushed for 1,956 yards 18 TDs. I believe he would be a good fit at Auburn with Hugh Freeze or somewhere like Wisconsin in a Phil Longo Offense.
5. Brennan Armstrong
Former Team: UVA
• Armstrong had a huge 2021 season with Robert Anae as OC. Last season the offense for the Hoos didn’t fit the strengths of Armstrong with Anae & Beck gone. He needs to find the right system that will allow him to be the gunslinger he is. In his career, he’s thrown for 9,034 yards 58 TDs, and rushed for 1,267 yards 20 TDs.
6. DJ Uiagalelei
Former Team: Clemson
• Uiagalelei showed flashes during the Covid Season throwing for 914 yards and 5 TDs while having 0 INTs, however, he regressed in 2021 & 2022. In his career, he has 5,681 Passing yards 36 TDs 17 INTs & he’s rushed for 913 yards and 15 TDs. Uiagalelei didn’t look comfortable at Clemson, he forced passes or held on to the ball too long. He isn’t completely washed, if he finds the right system and gets proper coaching he could make an impact in 2023.
7. Kyron Drones
Former Team: Baylor
Current Team: Virginia Tech
• I have Drones ranked #8 because the upside and potential he has is enormous. He’s a Dual Threat who should beat out Grant Wells for the Hokies starting QB job. He has a big arm but still needs development with his accuracy and he provides a spark on the ground with his rushing abilities.
8. Jeff Sims
Former Team: Georgia Tech
• Sims has thrown for 4,464 yards and 30 TDs in his career while also rushing for 1,152 yards and 11 TDs. The biggest question mark for sims is the turnovers, he has 23 INTs and has lost multiple fumbles. Sims has never been surrounded by superior talent at GT besides having Jahmyr Gibbs at RB. He was thrown into the fire as a True Freshman and had 13 passing TDs and 13 INTs. If Sims lands in the right spot he could be a productive player in 2023.
9. Phil Jurkovec
Former Team: Boston College
Current Team: Pittsburgh
• Jurkovec has already committed to Pittsburgh. He was excellent at BC when healthy and leaned on superstar WR Zay Flowers. I’m interested to see how big of an impact he can make at Pittsburgh. I don’t think he will be a Top 15 QB but could be a solid player and a definite upgrade over Kedon Slovis.
10. Jacolby Criswell
Former Team: UNC
Current Team: Arkansas
• Criswell is a talented player but it was impossible to beat out Drake Maye at UNC. He’s transferring back home to Arkansas but KJ Jefferson is expected to return. I’m not sure Criswell gets to play this season but when the time comes I expect him to make an impact.
11. Malik Hornsby
Former Team: Arkansas
• Hornsby is super fast, he’s a massive threat running the ball. In his career, he has 307 rushing yards and 1 TD. The reason I don’t have Hornsby higher than 12 is that he needs to be developed as a passer. In his career, he’s only completed 46.2% of his passes while throwing for 1 TD and 2 INTs.
12. Luke Altmyer
Former Team: Ole Miss
• Altmyer has potential in the right system. Earlier this season some expected he would beat out Jaxson Dart as QB1 but never did. In his career, he’s thrown for 317 yards 3 TDs 3 INTs, and rushed for 1 TD.
13. Tony Muskett
Former Team: Monmouth
Current Team: Virginia
• Muskett is a gunslinger who transfers up from the FCS level. In his career, he’s thrown for 5,687 yards 51 TDs, and rushed for 149 yards 5 TDs.
14. Dequan Finn
Former Team: Toledo
• Finn was one of the best QBs in the MAC. In his career, he’s thrown for 4,280 yards 40 TDs and rushed for 1,251 yards 17 TDs. I’m interested to see what offers he gets because he’s a player that’s flying under the radar.
Honorable Mention
• Cade McNamara – Iowa
• Hank Bachmeier
• Emory Jones
• Nick Evers
• Haynes King
• Graham Mertz
* Excludes Austin Reed and Brett Gabbert who withdrew their names.
