Setting the stage
The last meeting between these teams came just eight days prior to this one. The Bearcats were without star quarterback Desmond Ridder, and were forced to turn to Ben Bryant. Cincinnati leaned on their running back, Michael Warren, who had a nice day (122 yards and a score), but two interceptions and a fumble proved too much for the Bearcats to overcome. Memphis controlled the game and pulled out a 34-24 win. It’s always tough to beat the same team twice, but to play a team in back-to-back weeks is especially difficult.
How Cincinnati can win
Cincinnati’s starting quarterback, Desmond Ridder, is still questionable for this week’s game. Regardless of whether he plays or not, the Bearcat defense will be the key to victory. With the exception of a 46-43 win against East Carolina, the defense has kept them in ballgames. They average just over 21 points per game allowed, which does include last week’s 34 against Memphis.
Summary: The Bearcats must hold the Memphis Tigers under 30 points to give their offense a chance in this game. Cincinnati’s offense needs to average 6 yards per play to keep the pressure off their own defense.
How Memphis can win
Offense. Averaging 41.5 points per game, Memphis and their high-powered offense can beat almost anyone. Brady White and Damonte Coxie will need to have similar games to last week, in which the dynamic duo connected for 145 yards and a touchdown. The Tiger offense didn’t do anything crazy, but did enough to get the win. If they can play to their ability, they will run away with it.
Summary: Cincinnati has a really solid defense, but Memphis needs to get around 6.5 yards per play to defeat the Bearcats.
Both defenses will play well and Memphis will pull it out by a field goal. Memphis 27, Cincinnati 24
