When FSU’s on Offense

Warning: What you are about to read will not be fun, nor optimistic, nor remotely hopeful. Clemson’s defense is the best in the southeast. The #1 defense in the nation is Michigan, so don’t go all #SEC on me. But seriously – this is a very high-level defense. They’re very good against the pass, they are downright insane against the run. They have almost no glaring weaknesses – no place to try to attack. FSU will need to be extremely creative in order to move the ball at all against this team. Their defensive line is otherworldly – which could be a problem against our, uh, very slightly sub-par offensive line. Folks to look out for: (which could be most of everyone…)

  • R-Jr DE Clelin Ferrell – 20 tackles, 10.5 for loss. 6 sacks, 12 Run Stuffs.
  • Sr DE Austin Bryant – 6 TFL, 6 Run Stuffs, 3 sacks.
  • Fr DE Xavier Thomas – (yes, 3 DEs. I told you…) 7 TFL, 8 Run Stuffs, 2 sacks
  • Gr DT Christian Wilkins – 18 tackles, 5.5 for loss. 2 sacks, 8.5 Run Stuffs
  • Jr LB Tre Lamar – 33 tackles, 3.5 for loss. 2 sacks, 7.5 Run Stuffs.
  • R-Gr LB Kendall Joseph – 31 tackles.
  • R-So S Isaiah Simmons – 31.5 tackles, 3.5 for loss. 4.5 Run Stuffs, 1 Forced Fumble.
  • Jr S K’Von Wallace – 20.5 tackles, 1 INT

When FSU’s on Defense

Clemson is led on offense by true Freshman QB Trevor Lawrence. He’s got a huge arm and isn’t afraid to use it. He’s not the runner Kelly Bryant was last year, but Clemson will still run him to keep the defense honest. Clemson has a 4-headed monster at tailback, and they’re all good. They are led, however, by Travis Etienne. In the passing game, Tee Higgins and Hunter Renfrow lead a very talented receiver group. Overall, this offense will feature lots of misdirection, window dressing (pre-snap motion), and read options. FSU’s defense, especially the linebackers, will have to have the best game of their careers in order to keep this attack in check. Some stats:

  • Fr QB Trevor Lawrence – 12/2 TD/INT, 95/139 (68.3%) passing. 18 rushes for 69 yards.
  • So RB Travis Etienne – 98 rushes for 800 yards, 14 touchdowns.
  • R-Gr RB Adam Choice – 39 rushes for 291 yards, 2 TD
  • Jr RB Tavien Feaster – 38 rushes for 183 yards, 2 TD
  • Fr RB Lyn-J Dixon – 31 rushes for 323 yards – 10.4 y/carry, 3 TD
  • So WR Tee Higgins – 426 yards, 4 TDs.
  • R-Gr WR Hunter Renfrow – 262 yards, 1 TD, catches the ball 73% of the time
  • So WR Amari Rodgers – 227 yards, 1 TD, catches the ball 80% of the time
  • Fr WR Justyn Ross – 361 yards, 4 TD.

Other Factors

Clemson’s kicker, Greg Huegel, is average – long of 49, 7-10 field goals. But honestly, are they really gonna kick that many field goals? Their punter is awful – and I judge punters on the standard of Logan Tyler. Will Spiers averages less than 40 yards/punt. Neither their punt returner nor their kick returners have done anything this season to write home about.

Score Predictions

John: Clemson 30-14 – I think they put up a ton of yards, but can’t handle a short field. 3 FG for Huegel.

Cory: Clemson 41-10 – FSU can’t move the ball well at all, the defense tries really hard, but just can’t keep up with the constant 3-and-outs from the offense and breaks.
