Olu Fashanu, their premier left tackle, declined an NFL Draft opportunity after securing second-team All-American and All-Big Ten accolades in his previous season. And Fashanu has been continuously locking horns with Nittany Lions defense throughout the offseason.
Providing insights about the grueling exercises and daring challenges brewing within the camp, Fashanu shed light on the preparation and rigor that the team’s defense is undergoing. He proudly lauded his team’s defense as, in his opinion, the best in the country. The training and internal competition, he believes, are instrumental in amplifying the team’s resilience and game-play strategy.
Reflecting on last year’s performance, Penn State stood as one of the best defenses nationally, restricting opponents to an average of just 18 points per game. Despite the departure of six starters, including five draft picks, the Nittany Lions are still expected to have a stout, robust defense.
Forecasts for 2023 see the Nittany Lions squaring up to claim the title of the best defense in college football. Sports columnist Phil Steele positions Penn State’s DL, LBs and DBs in the top four for each, with the DBs ranked as the best secondary unit in the country.
Penn State’s offense is also recharging its arsenal with eight returning starters. However, Penn State will face the always tricky task of replacing their quarterback. Highly rated Drew Allar is forecasted to replace the ever-steady Sean Clifford, who has been firmly established at the quarterback position for four years.
