In a recent announcement, North Texas Head Coach Eric Morris has tabbed Stone Earle, the junior quarterback, to lead the Mean Green in their week one matchup against Cal. Stone was victorious in a strenuous three-way QB contest for the covetable position with Chandler Rogers and Jace Ruder.
This 6-foot, 207-pound quarterback’s journey to his current situation has been pretty convoluted. After spending his first two seasons with Abilene Christian, where he had substantial playtime, he transferred to UNT for the 2022 season. He stepped in sporadically to support veteran quarterback Austin Aune during their 7-7 season.
As previously mentioned, two other hopefuls were vying for the same spot Stone now occupies, namely Louisiana Monroe transfer Chandler Rogers and the senior Jace Ruder. Rogers seemed to be a sure bet for the first position when he arrived at UNT in January, but expectations took a turn when Morris chose not to name a starter after the spring.
As a result, the three QBs continued to vie for the slot throughout the summer. All three showed commendable performance during fall camp. However, Morris noted Stone’s clear and steady improvement in accuracy from spring, which undoubtedly contributed to his naming as starter.
Given the surprise of going with Earle over Rogers and Ruder, fans of the Mean Green are now anxiously waiting to see Earle back in action when the games officially begin.
While Stone is set to take the lead in the first game, that doesn’t mean the competition is over. Coach Morris has made it clear that Chandler Rogers will also see some action during the game against Cal. Keep an eye out for him on the field.
