Bowl games are fun, sure, but how much more fun would it be if instead of bowl committees seeking out their teams, we instead scrap all bowl tie-ins and randomize the whole thing. We could get some really fun games and maybe create new rivalries.

This was done with contribution from our Florida Atlantic beat writer, Kevin Fielder. First, we took all the bowl teams and lined them and the games in a randomizer.

Next, we randomized all games into and order and then, one-by-one, randomized teams into the games. We also simulated the games, just so you could see how they would turn out.

2019-2020 Bowl Games, Randomized:

Military: Miss St (6-6) vs. Iowa State (7-5)

Proj: Iowa State 30-10

ISU QB Brock Purdy 33-50, 440 yds, 2 TD, 2 Int

This is tame in terms of what we could have had in this slot. Mississippi State and Iowa State would be watchable. Iowa State wins, gets to eight wins and hey, that’s not bad.

Sun Bowl: Penn St (10-2) vs. Cincinnati (10-3)

Proj: Penn St 30-27

PSU QB Sean Clifford: 19-33, 257 yds, 2 TD, 2 Int

Neither of these two teams would have fallen close to the Sun Bowl, as both had very good seasons. Penn State wins a close one, and the sun sets for both teams.

Rose: Kent State (6-6) vs. Kentucky (7-5)

Proj: Kentucky 27-17

KEN RB Asim Rose 16 attempts 72 yds

Good Lord, this couldn’t have turned out better. As soon as it was randomized, Kevin and I cried, not because it means some poor soul would have to watch this, but because the phrase “Kent State in the Rose Bowl” should be on Reddit under r/BrandNewSentence.

Quick Lane: UCF (9-3) vs. Boston College (6-6)

Proj: UCF 48-17

UCF RB Bentavious Thompson: 61 yds, 2 TDs

Boston College is the most believable of these two teams, but the result is also very likely.

Cure: Southern Miss (7-5) vs. UVA (9-4)

Proj: Virginia 61-20

UVA QB Bryce Perkins: 28-40, 454 yards, 4 TD

UVA loses the ACC title game and plummets to the Cure Bowl, where they take out frustrations on Southern Miss, who can only watch as Bryce Perkins has a mammoth game.

Lending Tree: UNC (6-6) vs. Nevada (7-5)

Proj: UNC 41-9

UNC RB Michael Carter: 156 yds, 2 TDs

Mack Brown dances after Michael Carter dances all over Nevada, who is just happy to be here.

Alamo: Central Michigan (8-5) vs. Auburn (9-3)

Proj: Auburn 37-27

Aub QB Bo Nix: 14-26, 265 yds, 2 TD, 1 Int

This game shouldn’t have been as close as it was, but also, Auburn in the Alamo Bowl. Remember the Alamo (Bowl).

Boca: Ohio (6-6) vs. Eastern Michigan (6-6)

Proj: Ohio 34-17

Ohio QB Nathan Rouke: 16-26, 238 yds, 2 TD, 2 Int, 108 yds rush, TD

A MAC game in bowl season, what is more MAC than this?

Liberty: Buffalo (7-5) v FIU (6-6)

Proj: Buffalo 35-30

Buffalo RB Jaret Patterson: 221 yds, 3 TDs

Give me Liberty (bowl) or give me death, just give me the remote.

Independence: Air Force (10-2) vs. Louisville (7-5)

Proj: Louisville 49-16

LOU WR Chatarius Atwell: 7 rec, 206 yds, 3 TDs

I was shocked when I saw this result, Louisville completes a bounce-back season with eight wins.

Bahamas: Wisconsin (10-3) v Baylor (11-2)

Proj: Baylor 47-6

BAY RB John Lovett: 11 att., 75 yds, 2 TD

Sic em’ Bears. Johnathan Taylor can’t power the Badgers past Baylor.

Vegas: Washington State (6-6) vs. Hawaii (9-5)

Proj: Washington State 41-31

WSU QB Anthony Gordon: 51-71, 558 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT

What’s more “Vegas” than Cole McDonald? The underdog winning, and probably hitting the over.

Holiday: BYU (7-5) vs. Memphis (12-1)

Proj: Memphis 38-17

MEM Kenny Gainwell 17 att., 131 yds, 1 TD

Memphis beats BYU, but not in the bowl they wanted to be in. 13-1 is 13-1 though.

Redbox: Liberty (7-5) vs. Wake Forest (8-4)

Proj: Wake Forest 44-14

WF WR Kendall Hinton: 15 rec, 195 yds, 2 TDs

We get to see Hugh Freeze coach from a theater chair while Wake Forest gets to nine wins.

Orange: SMU (10-2) vs. UAB (9-4)

Proj: SMU 26-0

SMU QB Shane Buechele: 24-37, 215 yds, 2 TD, 1 Int.

Yikes. SMU and UAB being in the Orange Bowl sounds like someone’s NCAA 14 dynasty.

Camellia: Arkansas State (7-5) vs. San Diego State (9-3)

Proj: Arkansas State 48-13

ASU QB Layne Hatcher: 20-31, 414 yds, 5-1

This is a bowl game, that’s all.

Idaho Potato: Washington (7-5) vs. Oklahoma State (8-4)

Proj: Oklahoma State 24-17

OKSt RB Chubba Hubbard 36 att 224 yds 2 TD

Chubba Hubbard earns his potatoes, eat em up.

Citrus: Georgia Southern (7-5) vs. Tennessee (7-5)

Proj: Tennessee 38-6

Tenn WR Jauan Jennings: 5 rec, 164 yds, TD

What’s more Tennessee than the Citrus Bowl?

Outback: Minnesota (10-2) vs. Marshall (8-4)

Proj: Marhsall 22-14

Marsh RB Brenden Knox: 178 yds

This is not the game PJ Fleck wanted to be in, but hey, maybe he can dress up as a bloomin’ onion.

Armed Forces: Miami (FL) (6-6) vs. Miami (OH) (8-5)

Proj: Miami (FL) 30-24

MIA (FL) WR KJ Osborn: 8 rec. 179 yds, 2 TD

The Miami Bowl! Canes fans just want this to be over.

Pinstripe: Georgia (11-2) vs. Boise State (12-1)

Proj: 41-17 UGA

UGA QB Jake Fromm: 24/37 252 yds 3 TD, 0 INT

This one is actually a good matchup. UGA also tried to attack the Boise State Bronco.

Cotton: Utah State (7-5) vs. Iowa (9-3)

Proj: 33-16 Utah State

UTST WR Siaosi Mariner: 6 rec 77 yds, 1 TD

Upset!

Texas: Louisiana (10-3) vs. Texas (7-5)

Proj: 38-24 Texas

Sam Ehlinger 31-44 413 yds, 3 TD

Texas in the Texas bowl, still not back yet.

Hawaii: Illinois (6-6) vs. Kansas State (8-4)

Proj: KSU 16-10

KSU K Blake Edward Lynch: 3-3, XP

Yes, the kicker is the player of the game, that’s what kind of game this was.

New Mexico: Florida (10-2) vs. Oregon (11-2)

Proj: 40-6 UF

UF RB Lamical Perine: 11 att., 112 yds, 1 TD

The New Mexico Bowl got a great matchup, but Gators are definitely scarier than Ducks.

Sugar: Florida State (6-6) vs. Charlotte (7-5)

Proj: FSU 28-10

FSU James Blackman: 17-31 425 yds, 3 TD, 1 TD

This is a crazy matchup. Will Healy let us all down though?

New Orleans: Navy (9-2) vs. Virginia Tech (8-4)

Proj: VaTech 28-10

VT QB Hendon Hooker: 18/38, 304 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT

Perfectly watchable. How does Tech handle Navy?

Belk: Wyoming (7-5) vs. Michigan (9-3)

Proj: Michigan 23-7

Mich WR Tarik Black: 5 rec, 99 yds, 1 TD

Wyoming on the east coast? Wyoming going back home.

First Responder: Alabama (10-2) vs. Louisiana Tech (9-3)

Proj: Alabama 42-26

ALA QB Mac Jones: 21-29, 362yds, 4 TD, 1 Int

Nick Saban isn’t happy, and Louisiana Tech feels the hurt because of it. Feels more like a cupcake game for the Tide than a bowl.

Gator: Utah (11-2) vs. Arizona State (7-5)

Proj: Utah 17-16

Utah WR Demari Simpkins 3 rec. 102 yds.

Utah avoids the upset in a PAC-12 conference bowl game.

Music City: Tulane (6-6) vs. Indiana (8-4)

Proj: Tulane 17-14

TUL QB Justin McMillian: 13-25, 199yds, 1-1, 80yds rush

Alas, 9-Windiana was not meant to be. Tulane though, that’s a surprise.

Birmingham: Georgia State (7-5) vs. App State (12-1)

Proj: GaST 29-17

GaSt RB Tra Barnett: 22 att. 156 yds 1 TD

Wow, first App State loses Eli Drinkwitz, now they lose to Georgia State in the Birmingham Bowl.

Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla: USC (8-4) vs. Texas A&M (7-5)

Proj: USC 38-23

USC RB Tyler Vaughns: 11 rec. 172 yds 1 TD

Ha, ha. This is great. ‘roll Trojans.

Cheez-It: Pitt (7-5) vs. California (7-5)

Proj: Cal 40-10

CAL QB Chase Garbers 18-27, 276 yds, 3 TD

Cal is able to tell the uniforms apart better than Pitt. Pitt “stinks”. Cheesy jokes abound.

Frisco: Notre Dame (10-2) vs. FAU (10-3)

Proj: ND 36-16

ND WR Chase Claypool: 6 rec. 137 yds

FAU faces Notre Dame, but not in the prestigious bowl they had hoped.

Arizona: Temple (8-4) vs. Western Michigan (7-5)

Proj: Temple 22-14

TEM PWR Branden Mack 5 rec. 82 yds 1 TD

Temple wins their bowl, no one hits the over.

Camping World: Michigan State (6-6) vs. Western Kentucky (8-4)

Proj: Michigan State 42-7

MSU WR Cody White: 5 rec 142 yds 3 TD

Michigan State camps out in the endzone.

Which of these was your favorite? (we know it’s Kent St in the Rose Bowl)
