Bowl season is finally underway.

Unlike in previous years, there was essentially no time in between championship week and the start of bowl season. There are fewer games than expected due to COVID-19 cancellations, but the games that take place should be intriguing.

Here’s a brief overview for the first week of bowl season.

MYRTLE BEACH BOWL

APPALACHIAN STATE (8-3, 6-2) VS. NORTH TEXAS (4-5, 3-4)

When: Monday Dec. 21, 2:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Where: Brooks Stadium (Conway, SC)

Line: Appalachian State -21; O/U: 65.5

Intriguing Stat for Appalachian State: This season, the Mountaineers’ defense allowed the lowest completion percentage in the country at 46.9%. They also have the most wins by any undefeated team all-time in bowl games.

Intriguing Stat for North Texas: The Mean Green will now participate in their third bowl game while owning a losing record — the most by any team in the country. They also had a losing record in 2001 and 2016.

FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL

TULANE (6-5, 3-5) VS. NEVADA (6-2, 6-2)

BOCA RATON BOWL

UCF (6-3, 5-3) VS. NO. 16 BYU (10-1)

Intriguing Stat for UCF: Quarterback Dillon Gabriel only needs 385 passing yards in this game to set a new school record for most passing yards in a single season. The record is currently held by McKenzie Milton at 4,037 passing yards (2017).

Intriguing Stat for BYU: The Cougars have outscored their opponents by an average of 28.4 points per game, second-most in the country behind Alabama. Last season, they had a scoring margin of just three points per game.

NEW ORLEANS BOWL

Intriguing Stat for Georgia Southern: The Eagles are tied for the second most turnovers forced this season at 22. The Syracuse Orange have the most this season with 24.

NEW MEXICO BOWL

Intriguing Stat for Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers have now made their first bowl game in their third eligible season. The only other FBS schools to have not previously made a bowl game are Texas State and Massachusetts.

GASPARILLA BOWL

SOUTH CAROLINA (2-8, 2-8) VS. UAB (6-3, 3-1)

Intriguing Stat for UAB: The Blazers’ defense ranks in the top 10 in the country this season in opponent yards per play (eighth) and opponent third down conversion percentage (fifth).
