In a year full of ups and downs for baseball, the Tidewater Collegiate Summer League concluded with the Tidewater Drillers and Greenbrier Knights facing off. The contest came the day after a doubleheader determined the two teams battling for the title.
At the legendary War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia, the two teams battled to a 7-7 tie. That was until a Trent Hanchey (Norfolk State) sacrifice fly brought in Trey Blow (Bryant & Stratton Albany) for the go-ahead run in an 8-7 victory for Greenbrier.
The Knights only used two pitchers. Starter Joe Califano (Virginia Tech) went four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run (two unearned) while striking out six.
Vincent Bashara (Old Dominion) ended up with the win and pitched the final five innings. Bashara allowed six hits, with one earned run (three unearned) and also struck out six.

On offense, Jacob Jackson (Washington & Lee) went 3-for-4, with one run and two RBIs. Blow, Trent Hanchey, Ty Hanchey (Norfolk State), Bo Gonzales (Coastal Bend), Ricky Sisto (St.Andrews), and Shane McCarthy (Florida Southern) all also drove runs in for the Knights.

For the Drillers, Mason Dunaway (James Madison) went 1-for-3 with a run, and two RBIs. The Drillers’ starter, Tanner James, went 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, and two earned runs while striking out one batter. The Drillers left 10 runners on base.
Errors almost doomed the Knights as they committed four during the game, but their bats were just hot enough to carry them.
The MVP of the game would have to go to Jacob Jackson. While at Maury High School, Jackson excelled in the classroom as well as on the field, with a near-perfect SAT score, save for one wrong answer. On the field, he had all the right answers for Greenbrier and was perfect in the field.
