While we do not get to enjoy any football during the Easter season, we do get to enjoy some Easter Eggs at times.
While many call a shutout a “Goose Egg”, here at Fifth Quarter, we call them an “Easter Egg.” At least that’s what we’re doing today.
If your opponents Easter Egg you, it is the ultimate embarrassment as you could get nothing going on offense, and were just shut out. So let us take a look, and rehash the last Easter Egg game from 2019.
The Independence Bowl
Bowl games are meant for a treat, not only for the football programs, but the fans. The Independence Bowl was a defensive struggle and showcased major offensive ineptness from Miami. In Shreveport, Louisiana the day after Christmas, the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech laid a huge Easter Egg on the Miami Hurricanes.
The ‘Canes became the temporary laughing stalk of college football. Now, second-year head coach Manny Diaz is furious at work to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Out of all the bowl games last season, Miami was the only program to be handed an Easter Egg.
While it’s embarrassing this happened for Miami, this might have been the milestone moment that Skip Holtz and Louisiana Tech needed. This was the first season that Louisiana Tech has had a 10-win season. The Bulldogs are now looking to build off of that. After just missing the Conference USA Championship last year, Louisiana Tech will likely be in contention again.
Since this embarrassment, Miami has landed graduate transfer D’Eriq King, a top 15 recruiting class, and a major coaching overhaul on the offensive side. This might be the one time that an Easter Egg was a blessing for the program. Don’t expect it to happen again for Miami for a very long time.
