Adding to the excitement around the commitment of three-star quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. choosing Old Dominion, ODU quickly got another in-state commit, bringing the Monarchs’ total for the 2021 class to three.

Mere hours after Edwards committed, fellow recruit Tariq Sims, out of Loudoun County, sent this tweet out:

That tweet, coupled with his relationship with Edwards sent Monarch fans into a frenzy; they knew what was coming when his next tweet came out.

The commitment of Sims, a shifty running back currently at 6-foot-0 and 180 pounds, might have shaken up some fans on Twitter, but it was really cemented a few days ago.

“Me and Billy started talking a few weeks ago and he gave me his list of top schools,” Sims said. “I feel like with me and Billy in the backfield, it could be something special, and with our mindsets going into this, I feel like we could definitely win a lot of games and change the program.”

ODU was the first offer for Sims whose top three also included Liberty and Youngstown State. Location was a key in Sims’ commitment.

“It’s (ODU) near the beach, which I love,” Sims said of his decision to commit. “The fact that there is basically a whole new coaching staff and I believe I could make a difference.”

Sims’ mother, who is also a fan of the beach, plans to move down close to ODU. She’ll get a chance to see her son play FBS football on the weekends.

Another key for Sims was his relationship with that new coaching staff.

“The relationship I’ve developed with the coaches, especially Coach Tony Lucas, the running backs coach, is good,” Sims said. “I’m definitely excited to see what we can do in the next four years.”

Sims also appreciates the new Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard stadium and the atmosphere at ODU.

“It’s beautiful; I love it,” Sims exclaimed. “Hopefully, a lot of fans come out to the games and we can get a bigger fan base coming in. Hopefully, we can win games, make it to some championships and win bowl games too.”

In Sims, ODU gets a quick running back as well as a guy who can be used in the slot and on kick returns. Versatility is the name of the game for ODU’s newest commit, and now he plans to get to work helping recruit just as Edwards is.
