The 2020 college football season is in question with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to be prevalent in the United States.
Still, a number of conferences plan on moving forward with football. What this season will feature few or maybe even none of are bowl games.
What bowl-eligibility will look like is anyone’s guess. With that said, we look at what school has the longest bowl streak in each Group of 5 conference.
American Athletic Conference: Memphis (6)
With three 10-win seasons in the last six years, Memphis currently owns the longest bowl streak in The American. Last season, the Tigers reached a New Year’s Six bowl for the first time. Prior to the streak, Memphis had never finished ranked in the AP Poll. It has done so three times since.
Conference USA: Louisiana Tech (6)
In the 27 seasons as an FBS program from 1987 to 2013, Louisiana Tech appeared in just four bowls. Over the last six seasons under head coach Skip Holtz, the Bulldogs have made a bowl game each season. Not only has Louisiana Tech appeared in six straight bowls, but it has won all six. This past season, Louisiana Tech notched its first 10-win season as an FBS program with a 14-0 win over Miami in the Independence Bowl.
MAC: Ohio (5)
Although he was unable to successfully succeed Tom Osborne at Nebraska, Frank Solich has found himself a home at Ohio. Solich has had just two losing seasons in 15 years at Ohio. The Bobcats have reached a bowl in each of the last five years and have won the last three. When Solich took over in 2005, Ohio had just two bowl appearances ever and was coming off of four straight losing seasons.
Mountain West: Boise State (18)
With the fifth-longest bowl streak in the country, Boise State has not missed a bowl game since 2001. The Broncos have not had a losing season since 1997. During its bowl streak, Boise State has appeared in three BCS and New Year’s Six bowls and won them all. The Broncos are 10-7 in bowls during their streak. The First Responder Bowl against Boston College to close 2018 was canceled.
Sun Belt: Arkansas State (9)
A streak that began with four head coaches in four years, Arkansas State has made a bowl every year for nearly a decade. The Red Wolves have found some stability at the coaching position in Blake Anderson. Arkansas State has not had a losing season since 2010. During their streak, the Red Wolves are 4-5 in bowl games. They have a pair of 10-win seasons during that stretch.
