1787 - The first of the Federalist Papers, which called for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, was published.

1858 - Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was born in New York City.

1904 - New York City's first rapid transit underground subway, the IRT, opened.

1938 - Du Pont announced that it would name its new synthetic yarn "nylon".

1941 - The Chicago Daily Tribune dismissed the possibility of war with Japan, editorializing, “She cannot attack us. That is a military impossibility. Even our base at Hawaii is beyond the effective striking power of her fleet.”

1954 - U.S. Air Force Col. Benjamin O. Davis Jr. was promoted to brigadier general, the first Black officer to achieve that rank in the USAF.

1978 - Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for their work toward a Middle East peace accord.

1995 - A sniper killed one soldier and wounded 18 others at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. (Paratrooper William J. Kreutzer was convicted in the shootings, and condemned to death; the sentence was later commuted to life in prison.)

1997 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 554.26 points, forcing the stock market to shut down.

1998 - Hurricane Mitch cut through the western Caribbean, pummeling coastal Honduras and Belize; the storm caused several thousand deaths in Central America in the days that followed.

2001 - In Washington, the search for deadly anthrax widened to thousands of businesses and 30 mail distribution centers.

2005 - White House counsel Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to the Supreme Court after three weeks of criticism from fellow conservatives.

2005 - Surgeons in France performed the world's first partial face transplant on a woman who was mauled by a dog.

2008 - Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, was convicted of seven corruption charges for lying about free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor. (A judge later dismissed the case, saying prosecutors had withheld evidence.)

2016 - A jury in Portland, Oregon, delivered an extraordinary blow to the government in a long-running battle over the use of public lands when it acquitted all seven defendants, including group leader Ammon Bundy, who were involved in the armed occupation of a national wildlife refuge in 2014.

2016 - Law enforcement officers dressed in riot gear evicted protesters from private land in the path of the Dakota Access oil pipeline, dramatically escalating a months-long dispute over Native American rights and the project’s environmental impact.

2018 - A gunman shot and killed 11 congregants and wounded six others at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history; authorities said the suspect, Robert Bowers, raged against Jews during and after the rampage. (Bowers, who is awaiting trial, has pleaded not guilty; prosecutors are seeking a death sentence.)

2020 - Amy Coney Barrett was formally sworn as the Supreme Court’s ninth justice, her oath administered in private by Chief Justice John Roberts.

2020 - Disgraced self-improvement guru Keith Raniere was sentenced to 120 years for turning some adherents into sex slaves branded with his initials and for sexually abusing a 15-year-old.

1985 - The Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games to win the World Series.

1986 - The New York Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games to win the World Series.

1991 - The Minnesota Twins defeated the Atlanta Braves in seven games to win the World Series.

1995 - The contract that finalized the relocation of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore was signed in secrecy.

1996 - Bud Adams, owner of the Houston Oilers, announced his team would play one more season in Houston before relocating to Nashville, Tennessee.

1996 - Irving Fryar of the Philadelphia Eagles became the 15th player in NFL history with 600 career pass receptions.

1999 - The New York Yankees swept the Atlanta Braves to win the World Series.

2002 - Emmitt Smith (Dallas Cowboys) became the all-time leading rusher in the NFL when he extended his career yardage to 16,743. He achieved the record in his 193rd game. He also scored his 150th career touchdown.

2003 - The Monday Night Football game between the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins was played in Tempe, Arizona. The game had been moved from San Diego due to wild fires.

2004 - Barry Bonds' 700th home run ball was sold at auction for $804,129.

2004 - After an 86-year wait, the Boston Red Sox swept the St. Louis Cardinals to win their first World Series since 1918.

2006 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers in six games to win their 10th World Series in franchise history.

2015 - American women's soccer star Abby Wambach announces her retirement.

2019 - Tiger Woods wins the inaugural Zozo Championship to record his 82nd PGA Tour victory, tying Sam Snead's record.

2020 - The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to win the World Series, which was played at a neutral site in Arlington, Texas due to coronavirus concerns.
