1774 - The First Continental Congress adjourned in Philadelphia.

1825 - The Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie to the Hudson River, opened.

1861 - The legendary Pony Express officially ceased operations, giving way to the transcontinental telegraph. (The last run of the Pony Express was completed the following month.)

1881 - Wyatt Earp, his two brothers and "Doc" Holliday confronted Ike Clanton's gang in a gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Ariz. Three members of Clanton's gang were killed; Earp's brothers were wounded.

1944 - The World War II Battle of Leyte Gulf ended in a major Allied victory over Japanese forces, whose naval capabilities were badly crippled.

1962 - In one of the most dramatic verbal confrontations of the Cold War, American U.N. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson asked his Soviet counterpart during a Security Council debate whether the USSR had placed missiles in Cuba.

1972 - National security adviser Henry Kissinger declared "peace is at hand" in Vietnam.

1975 - Anwar Sadat became the first Egyptian president to pay an official visit to the United States.

1979 - South Korean President Park Chung Hee was assassinated by the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency.

1984 - A newborn with a severe heart defect was given the heart of a baboon in an experimental transplant in Loma Linda, California. She lived for 21 more days.

1994 - Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel and Prime Minister Abdel Salam Majali of Jordan signed a peace treaty in a ceremony attended by President Bill Clinton.

2001 - President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act, giving authorities unprecedented ability to search, seize, detain or eavesdrop in their pursuit of possible terrorists.

2002 - Russian government forces stormed the Moscow theater held by Chechen rebels. More than 100 hostages were killed.

2010 - Iran began loading fuel into the core of its first nuclear power plant.

2011 - President Barack Obama recalled his struggles with student loan debt as he unveiled a plan at the University of Colorado Denver aimed at giving millions of young people some relief on their payments.

2016 - The Pentagon worked to stave off a public relations nightmare, suspending efforts to force California National Guard troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan to repay enlistment bonuses that might have been improperly awarded.

2018 - Former Fox News Channel personality Megyn Kelly was fired from her NBC morning show after triggering an uproar by suggesting it was OK for white people to wear blackface at Halloween.

2020 - Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court by a deeply divided Senate, with Republicans overpowering Democrats to install President Donald Trump’s nominee days before the election and secure a likely conservative court majority for years to come.

1911 - The Philadelphia Athletics defeat the New York Giants in six games to win the World Series.

1960 - The American League approves the move of the Washington Senators to become the Minnesota Twins and announces new franchises for Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. for 1961.

1980 - The St. Louis Cardinals set an NFL record with 12 sacks in a game against the Baltimore Colts.

1981 - The Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees in six games to win the World Series.

1982 - Steve Carlton became the first four-time winner of the Cy Young Award.

1990 - Wayne Gretzky became the first NHL player to reach 2,000 points.

1993 - The NFL announces the Carolina Panthers expansion franchise.

1995 - Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored his 500th National Hockey League (NHL) career goal against the New York Islanders in his 605th game. He became the second-fastest player to attain the plateau. Wayne Gretzky had reached 600 goals by his 575th NHL game.

1996 - The New York Yankees defeat the Atlanta Braves in six games to win the franchise's 23rd World Series.

1997 - The Florida Marlins defeat the Cleveland Indians in seven games to win the World Series.

2000 - The New York Yankees defeat crosstown rival New York Mets in five games to win a third consecutive World Series.

2005 - The Chicago White Sox swept the Houston Astros to win their first World Series in 88 years (1917).

2016 - The Chicago Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians 5-1 in Game 2 for their first victory in a World Series game since 1945.

2018 - The Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in 18 innings (7 hours, 20 minutes) in Game 3 of the World Series, the longest World Series game by both innings and time in history.
