1746 - Princeton University received its charter in New Jersey.

1797 - Frenchman Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first parachute hump from a balloon, landing safely from a height of about 3,000 feet.

1836 - Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first president of the Republic of Texas.

1934 - Bank robber Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd was shot to death by federal agents at a farm in East Liverpool, Ohio.

1954 - West Germany joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

1962 - President John F. Kennedy announced an air and naval blockade of Cuba, following the discovery of Soviet missile bases on the island.

1950 - The Los Angeles Rams set an NFL record defeated the Baltimore Colts 70-27, a record score for a regular season game.

1972 - The Oakland Athletics defeat the Cincinnati Reds in seven games to win their first World Series since 1930 (Philadelphia Athletics).

1975 - The Cincinnati Reds defeat the Boston Red Sox in seven games to win the World Series.

2000 - Corey Dillon of the Cincinnati Bengals rushed for 278 yards against the Denver Broncos.

2011 - Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals became the third player in major league history to hit three home runs in a World Series game.
