1793 - French Queen Marie Antoinette was guillotined for treason during the French Revolution.

1859 - Abolitionist John Brown and his men captured the U.S. arsenal at Harper's Ferry in present-day West Virginia. (Ten of Brown’s men were killed and five escaped. Brown and six followers were captured; all were executed.)

1901 - Booker T. Washington dined at the White House as the guest of President Theodore Roosevelt, whose invitation to the Black educator sparked controversy.

1916 - Planned Parenthood had its beginnings as Margaret Sanger and her sister, Ethel Byrne, opened the first birth control clinic in Brooklyn, New York. (The clinic ended up being raided by police and Sanger was arrested.)

1934 - Chinese Communists, under siege by the Nationalists, began their “long march” lasting a year from southeastern to northwestern China.

1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis began as President John F. Kennedy was informed that reconnaissance photographs had revealed the presence of Soviet missile bases in Cuba.

1964 - China detonated its first atomic bomb.

1970 - Anwar Sadat was elected president of Egypt, succeeding the late Gamal Abdel Nasser.

1973 - Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho, who negotiated a cease-fire in the Vietnam War, were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize; Tho declined the award.

1978 - Cardinal Karol Wojtyla of Poland was elected Pope and took the name John Paul II.

1984 - Anglican Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

1987 - Rescuers freed 18-month-old Jessica McClure from an abandoned well in Midland, Texas that she had been trapped in for 58 hours.

1991 - A deadly shooting rampage took place in Killeen, Texas, as a gunman opened fire at a Luby’s Cafeteria, killing 23 people before taking his own life.

1995 - Hundreds of thousands of black men gathered in Washington, D.C. for the "Million Man March" led by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

1998 - David Trimble and John Hume were named recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering the Northern Ireland peace accord.

2001 - Twelve U.S. Senate offices were closed when a letter to Sen. Tom Daschle was found to contain anthrax.

2002 - The White House announced that North Korea had disclosed the existence of a secret nuclear weapons program.

2002 - President George W. Bush signed a congressional resolution authorizing war in Iraq.

2009 - Agricultural officials said pigs in Minnesota had tested positive for the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, the first such cases in the U.S.

2011 - The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

2017 - Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who had been captured and held by the Taliban for five years after walking away from his post in Afghanistan, pleaded guilty to desertion and endangering his comrades. (A military judge later decided not to send him to prison.)

2019 - President Donald Trump declared that the U.S. had no stake in defending Kurdish fighters in Syria who had died by the thousands as America’s partners against Islamic State extremists; Trump’s stance on the Kurds was condemned by Democrats and some Republicans who’d been staunch Trump supporters.

2019 - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats walked out of a meeting at the White House, with Pelosi accusing Trump of having a “meltdown”; Trump replied on Twitter that it was Pelosi who had a “total meltdown” and called her a “very sick person.”

1909 - The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Detroit Tigers in seven games to win the World Series.

1912 - The Boston Red Sox defeat the New York Giant in seven games to win the World Series.

1942 - The National Boxing Association freezes the titles of those serving in the armed forces.

1946 - Gordie Howe (Detroit Red Wings) played his first NHL game.

1960 - The National League voted to admit new franchises in New York (Mets) and Houston (Astros). It was the first change to the league since 1900.

1962 - The New York Yankees defeat the San Francisco Giants in seven games to win their 20th World Series.

1968 - American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos sparked controversy at the Mexico City Olympics by giving “Black power” salutes during a victory ceremony after they’d won gold and bronze medals in the 200-meter race.

1968 - The Milwaukee Bucks make their NBA debut with an 89-84 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

1969 - The New York Mets, a previously hapless expansion team, won the World Series in five games over American League powerhouse Baltimore Orioles.

1983 - The Baltimore Orioles defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in seven games to win the World Series.

1991 - Roy Tarpley (Dallas Mavericks) became the 7th player to be banned from the National Basketball Association (NBA) for life under the league's anti-drug agreement.

1996 - In Guatemala City, at least 84 people died and 147 were injured when a stampede of soccer fans occurred before the 1998 World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and Costa Rica.

2003 - Two NHL games ended in a scoreless tie for the first time since December 30, 1934. The games were Atlanta at the New York Rangers and Philadelphia at San Jose.

2016 - Ed Whitlock, at age 85, becomes the oldest person to complete a marathon in under four hours, finishing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 3 hours, 56 minutes.
