54 - Roman Emperor Claudius I died, poisoned apparently at the behest of his wife, Agrippina.

1775 - The Continental Congress authorized the construction of a naval fleet.

1792 - The cornerstone of the White House was laid in Washington, D.C. by President George Washington.

1843 - The Jewish organization B'nai B'rith was founded.

1845 - Texas ratified a state constitution.

1925 - Margaret Thatcher, the first female British prime minister, was born Margaret Roberts in Grantham, England.

1932 - President Herbert Hoover and Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes laid the cornerstone for the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C.

1943 - Italy declared war on Germany, its former Axis partner, during World War II.

1903 - The Boston Americans (Red Sox) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates to win the first World Series in eight games.

1914 - The Boston Braves sweep the Philadelphia Athletics to win the World Series.

1915 - The Boston Red Sox defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in five games to win the World Series.

1921 - The New York Giants defeat the New York Yankees in eight games to win the World Series.

1951 - In Atlanta, a football with a rubber covering was used for the first time in a college football game. Georgia Tech defeated LSU in the contest 25-7.

1960 - The World Series ended with a walk-off home run for the first time as Bill Mazeroski of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a round-tripper in the ninth inning of Game 7 against the New York Yankees.

1967 - The Seattle Supersonics (now Oklahoma City Thunder) lose their inaugural NBA game, 144-116 to the San Francisco Warriors.

1967 - The first game of the new American Basketball Association (ABA) is played with the Oakland Oaks defeating the Anaheim Amigos 132-129. The ABA featured a red, white and blue basketball and introduced the 3-point field goal to the sport.

1971 - The first World Series night game was telecast on NBC. Baltimore defeated Pittsburgh 4-3 in Game 4 at Three Rivers Stadium.

1985 - Phil Simms of the New York Giants passed for 513 yards in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, setting NFL records for pass attempts (62) and first downs (29).

1996 - Nick Lowery of the New York Jets breaks Jan Stenerud's NFL record with his 374th career field goal.

1998 - The NBA canceled the first two weeks of its regular season due to a player lockout.

1998 - The Pittsburgh Penguins filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in their history.

2002 - The Anaheim Angels defeated the Minnesota Twins to advance to their first World Series.

2019 - Simone Biles becomes the most decorated gymnast in history when she wins her record 25th medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

2019 - Brigid Kosgei of Kenya was the first woman to cross the finish line at the Chicago Marathon; her time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 4 seconds broke the women's world record.
