1789 - America held its first presidential election as voters chose electors who, a month later, selected George Washington as the nation's first chief executive.

1800 - Millard Fillmore, the 13th president of the United States, was born in Summerhill, New York.

1896 - Fanny Farmer published her first cookbook.

1904 - The Marconi International Marine Communication Company of London announced that the telegraphed letters "CQD" would serve as a maritime distress call (it was later replaced with "SOS").

1927 - Transatlantic commercial telephone service began between New York and London.

1942 - The World War II siege of Bataan began.

1953 - President Harry S. Truman announced during his State of the Union address that the U.S. had developed the hydrogen bomb.

1955 - Singer Marian Anderson made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, becoming the first black person to perform there as a member.

1959 - The United States recognized Fidel Castro's new government in Cuba.

1972 - Lewis F. Powell Jr. and William H. Rehnquist were sworn in as the 99th and 100th members of the United States Supreme Court.

1979 - Vietnamese forces captured the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, overthrowing Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge government.

1996 - A major blizzard paralyzed the eastern United States, claiming more than 100 lives.

1997 - Newt Gingrich became the first Republican re-elected Speaker of the House in 68 years.

1999 - For the second time in the nation's history, an impeached American president went on trial before the U.S. Senate as President Bill Clinton faced charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. (He was later acquitted.)

2002 - British Prime Minister Tony Blair and nine U.S. senators swept into Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan for an unannounced visit and promised Afghan leaders their full support in rebuilding their shattered country.

2004 - President George W. Bush proposed legal status, at least temporarily, for millions of immigrants improperly working in the U.S.

2005 - Actor Brad Pitt and actress Jennifer Aniston announced they were separating after four years of marriage.

2006 - American journalist Jill Carroll was abducted in Iraq and a translator was killed. (Carroll was released unharmed after 82 days.)

2006 - Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas), facing corruption charges, stepped down as House majority leader.

2015 - Masked gunmen stormed the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a French newspaper that had caricatured the Prophet Mohammad, methodically killing 12 people, including the editor, before escaping in a car. (Two suspects were killed two days later.)

2019 - Actor Kevin Spacey pleaded not guilty in Nantucket, Massachusetts, to groping an 18-year-old busboy in 2016 in the first criminal case brought against Spacey following a string of sexual misconduct allegations.

2019 - For the first time in more than 25 years, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was absent from oral arguments as she recuperated from cancer surgery.

2019 - Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam granted clemency to 30-year-old Cyntoia Brown, who said she was a 16-year-old sex trafficking victim when she killed a man in 2004.

2019 - Amazon eclipsed Microsoft as the most valuable publicly-traded company in the United States.

1899 - Walter Camp publishes his first All-American football team.

1920 - Joe Malone of the Quebec Bulldogs became the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer with 59.

1927 - In Hinckley, Illinois, the Harlem Globetrotters played their first game.

1961 - The first NFL Playoff Bowl (the now defunct "runner-up" bowl) saw the Detroit Lions defeat the Cleveland Browns 17-16.

1972 - The Los Angeles Lakers set an NBA record when they won their 33rd consecutive game.

1980 - The Philadelphia Flyers set an NHL record with 35 consecutive games without a loss.

1989 - The Cleveland Cavaliers tie an NBA regulation game record with 21 blocked shots against the New York Knicks.

1991 - Pete Rose left an Illinois federal prison and checked into a halfway house in Cincinnati. He was completing a sentence for cheating on his taxes.

1992 - Tom Seaver and Rollie Fingers are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1994 - Nancy Kerrigan withdrew from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. The previous day her right leg was severely bruised in an attack following a practice session; Tonya Harding, who later was found to have been associated with the attack, won the U.S. championship.

1995 - Coach Larry Brown of the Indiana Pacers records his 500th NBA victory.

1995 - The NHL Board of Governors threatened to cancel the regular season if the striking players did not agree with raising unrestricted free agency from 30 years to 32 years of age.

1998 - Shaquille O'Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers records his 1,000th career blocked shot.

2007 - Phil Jackson of the Los Angeles Lakers becomes the fastest coach in NBA history to win 900 games.

2008 - #2 LSU defeats #1 Ohio State 38-24 in New Orleans to win the BCS National Championship Game.

2010 - #1 Alabama defeated #2 Texas 37-21 in Pasadena, California to win the BCS National Championship Game.

2013 - #2 Alabama defeats #1 Notre Dame 42-14 in Miami to win the BCS National Championship Game.

2019 - #2 Clemson routed #1 Alabama 44-16 in the national championship game of the College Football Playoff. Clemson became the first team in the AP Poll era, dating back to 1936, to finish a season 15-0.
