1500 - Pedro Alvares Cabral discovered Brazil and claimed it for Portugal.

1509 - Henry VIII became king of England following the death of his father, Henry VII.

1616 - The Spanish poet Cervantes died in Madrid.

1864 - Congress authorized the inscription "In God We Trust" on coins minted as U.S. currency.

1889 - The land rush in Oklahoma began when it was opened to settlers.

1898 - With the United States and Spain on the verge of war, the U.S. Navy began blockading Cuban ports. Congress authorized creation of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, also known as the “Rough Riders.”

1915 - The first full-scale use of deadly chemicals in warfare took place as German forces unleashed chlorine gas against Allied troops at the start of the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium during World War I; thousands of soldiers are believed to have died.

1937 - Thousands of college students in New York City staged a “peace strike” opposing American entry into another possible world conflict.

1952 - An atomic test in Nevada became the first nuclear explosion shown on live network television as a 31-kiloton bomb was dropped from a B-50 Superfortress.

1954 - The televised Senate Army-McCarthy hearings began.

1970 - The first Earth Day was observed.

1983 - The West German news magazine Stern announced the discovery of personal diaries purportedly written by Adolf Hitler that turned out to be a hoax.

1993 - The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

1994 - Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, died in New York City at age 81, four days after suffering a stroke.

2000 - Armed immigration agents took Elian Gonzalez from the Miami home of his relatives to reunite him with his father.

2005 - Zacarias Moussaoui pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring with the Sept. 11 hijackers to kill Americans. (He was later sentenced to life in prison.)

2010 - The Deepwater Horizon oil platform, operated by BP, sank into the Gulf of Mexico two days after a massive explosion that killed 11 workers.

2016 - Leaders from 175 countries signed the Paris Agreement on climate change at the United Nations as the landmark deal took a key step toward entering into force years ahead of schedule.

1876 - Eight baseball teams began the inaugural season of the National League. In the first game Boston beat Philadelphia 6-5.

1914 - Babe Ruth made his pitching debut with the Baltimore Orioles.

1915 - The New York Yankees wore pinstripes and the hat-in-the-ring logo for the first time.

1945 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1947 - The Philadelphia Warriors defeated the Chicago Stags in six games to win the inaugural Basketball Association of America championship.

1962 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1970 - Tom Seaver of the New York Mets records 19 strikeouts in a win over the San Diego Padres.

1982 - The Atlanta Braves ended their 13-game winning streak to start the season, snapping their record for best start to a season in MLB history.

1990 - The Indianapolis Colts select Illinois quarterback Jeff George with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1994 - Michael Moorer became the first left-handed heavyweight boxing champion after defeating Evander Holyfield.

1995 - George Foreman defeats Axel Schulz in 12 rounds to win the heavyweight championship in Las Vegas.

1995 - The Cincinnati Bengals select Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2003 - Patrick Roy plays his final game in the NHL.

2004 - Professional football player Pat Tillman, who had traded in a multimillion dollar contract to serve as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan, was killed by friendly fire; he was 27 years old.

2010 - The NFL Draft was aired in prime time for the first time.

2010 - The St. Louis Rams select Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2015 - A federal judge in Philadelphia approved a settlement agreement expected to cost the NFL $1 billion over 65 years to resolve thousands of concussion lawsuits.

2015 - A federal appeals court in San Francisco overturned home run leader Barry Bonds’ obstruction of justice conviction, ruling 10-1 that his meandering answer before a grand jury in 2003 was not material to the government’s investigation into illegal steroids distribution.

2020 - The Boston Red Sox were stripped of their second-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft for sign-stealing in 2018; former Red Sox manager Alex Cora was suspended through the 2020 postseason for his role in the Astros’ sign-stealing operation.
