Is Florida QB Anthony Richardson the Next No. 1 Pick in the NFL Draft?

by Larry Riggs
The Florida Gators were shut out for the first time since the 1988 season.

Will Anthony Richardson be the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft? It seems far-fetched, but some insiders are saying not to discount the former Florida quarterback. Richardson has an incredibly high ceiling, but also has the potential to bust. However, his performance at the NFL combine has put him on everyone’s radar, and rumors of him going first overall have started to circulate.

While many agree that Richardson is likely to go in the top 10, it seems baffling that he would go ahead of more sure-fire quarterback prospects such as Bryce Young from Alabama or C.J. Stroud from Ohio State. If Young falls past the Indianapolis Colts at No. 4 or Stroud with the Carolina Panthers picking at No. 9, something must have gone horribly wrong.

However, the Raiders are one team to watch out for absolute shenanigans, as they have a history of making wild picks. Richardson would have been the ultimate Al Davis pick, but even with Mark Davis running the show now, there is still a lot to like about him. Josh McDaniels also needs to find his quarterback soon or risk being forever just a coordinator in a few years, so the Silver and Black may be a team to watch when it comes to trading up for Richardson.

The Detroit Lions could also be interested in Richardson, picking at No. 6, particularly if Jared Goff proves insufficient. Ultimately, if a team wants to land Richardson, they may need to trade up inside the top five to get him. It’s unlikely that four quarterbacks will go consecutively to start the draft, but it’s expected that Indianapolis will take one no lower than fourth.

Richardson’s boom-or-bust potential makes him a risky but intriguing pick, and it seems certain that he will go in the top 10. Whether he goes first overall remains to be seen, but it’s clear that he has the attention of many NFL teams. The draft is set to be wild, and Richardson is just one of the many exciting prospects to keep an eye on.
