In a recent announcement, the team signed tight end Robert Tonyan to their practice squad.
Tonyan, a former Green Bay Packers player, brings a wealth of experience to the roster. Undrafted in 2017, he spent six seasons in Green Bay, where he achieved notable success alongside quarterback Aaron Rodgers. During the 2020 season, he recorded 11 touchdowns and established a strong rapport with Rodgers, highlighted by a standout performance in primetime against the Atlanta Falcons.
His journey has been marked by ups and downs, including a torn ACL that sidelined him for part of the 2021 season. Following a stint with the Chicago Bears in 2023, where he totaled just 11 catches, Tonyan had a brief period with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 without registering any stats.
Adding Tonyan is a response to the Chiefs’ growing need for tight end depth. The team has faced significant injuries this season, with key contributors like Jared Wiley and Jody Fortson ruled out for the remainder of the year. This leaves Mahomes needing additional options as they move toward the playoffs.
The Chiefs are optimistic about the return of Peyton Hendershot, who has recently entered a practice window, providing further hope for their tight end corps. Additionally, veteran tight end Anthony Firkser has been signed to bolster the team’s lineup behind established stars like Travis Kelce and Noah Gray.
