Old Dominion’s 2021 recruiting class got a big boost as in-state quarterback prospect Billy Edwards has narrowed his list down to five. The Monarchs are still firmly in the mix for the three-star signal-caller out of Burke.
Edwards, who helped lead his Lake Braddock team the the region 6C playoffs. passed for over 3,000 yards and only six interceptions last season. That’s to go along with five rushing scores and 31 touchdown passes.
ODU joins Miami University, Florida International, William & Mary, and Kent State in Edwards’ final five.
“ODU has definitely recruited me the hardest and has shown how much I mean to the program,” an excited Edwards said. “To go there and help head coach Ricky Rahne, Coach (Kirk) Campbell and the rest of the staff turn around ODU into a (Conference USA) powerhouse is something unique and attractive.”

While ODU is not the only Virginia school in Edwards’ top five, it is the only FBS program from the state. The Monarchs have a schedule in years to come that would be attractive to any recruit.
“It (the schedule) is definitely cool to see,” Edwards said. “I want to be playing the best competition and ODU scheduling those games shows they want to as well.”
Edwards has been carefully watching what ODU has done in recruiting under Rahne. So far, he’s excited about what he sees.
“I think ODU has a lot of weapons that can help me when I get on campus,” Edwards commented. “I’ve been doing my research on the wide receiver commits in the 2020 class and some of the 2021 kids they offered.
“Honestly, if ODU ends up my choice, there are some guys I will push to come in-state,” Edwards said. “Guys like Umari Hatcher, Max James, and some players from southern Virginia.”
Should he choose the Monarchs, Edwards could join three other quarterbacks on the roster. That includes current redshirt sophomore Hayden Wolff, incoming freshman Dominique Anthony and current redshirt junior Steven Williams. There’s no guarantee that all players stay at ODU until the 2021 season.
