The Seminoles move to 8-1 on the young season after sending the Huskies (7-3) back to Connecticut with their tail tucked between their legs. After a back-and-forth first half, the Seminoles’ lead in the second half was never less than 5. Unlike the previous game against Troy, the Huskies are a solid basketball team. This game was also a de facto home game for UConn, being played in New Jersey. The Seminoles did a great job bouncing back from a sloppy win over Troy to beat this team.
UConn is one of the few teams the Seminoles will face in the out-of-conference schedule that is good from three while utilizing close to the same amount of depth. The Seminoles played 9 men tonight, a season low, while the Huskies trotted out 10. Terance Mann was the leading scorer tonight for the ‘Noles, getting 20 points and 9 rebounds. He also achieved the 1,000 point mark in his FSU career. Mfiondu Kabengele added 15 points before fouling out, and Christ Koumadje added 11 rebounds to a 7-point effort.
For the Huskies, Alterique Gilbert scored 24 points on 8/15 shooting, including 4/6 from three. Jalen Adams added 15 points and 5 rebounds. The Husky defense was out to prove they could hang with the Seminoles, forcing 22 turnovers, including 16 in the second half alone. This, compared to 6 assists, is something that Leonard Hamilton and his coaching staff must figure out how to cut down on these turnovers. I know we harp on this every time, but Duke, UNC, and UVA will eat FSU alive if we give the ball away at our current pace.
What’s Next for the ‘Noles
The ‘Noles get a week’s rest before at home before playing an absolutely dreadful Southeast Missouri State team. The Redhawks are 5-5, with losses to perennial powers Western Illinois and South Alabama. Their best game was a 63-42 win over an even more decrepit Chattanooga team. If you like to see blowouts and walk-ons, this is the game for you.
The Redhawks are lead by the duo of junior guard Skyler Hogan and sophomore Ledarrius Brewer, scoring 12.8 and 12.1 ppg, respectively. Brewer also adds a team-high 6 rebounds per contest. Again, length should be a problem for the Redhawks, as their starting lineup features nobody taller than 6-8.
The game will be on the ACC Network.
