Even though FSU is 1-1, it feels like they are off to their worst start of all time. It seems like nothing is going right, and the next ten games seem very dark. With a narrow win over FCS Samford, there are still those in the fan-base jumping off the cliff. Some were calling for the firing of Coach Taggart right away and negativity towards players. While we do have glaring problems in this first season, it is time for the fan base to get perspective. Let us look at some scores/results of big name programs with their coach in the first season. This is comparing apples to oranges as each programs situation is different, but perspective that first year coaches struggle is shown.
2016 Georgia Bulldogs 8-5 (4-4) Kirby Smart
Georgia 26 Nicholls State 24
Georgia 16 Vanderbilt 17
Georgia 35 Louisiana Lafayette 21
Most coaches would love to have what Kirby Smart accomplished in his first season. Winning eight games, and winning a bowl game is a great first season. But as you can see above there were some struggles within the season, and some to inferior teams. Similar to FSU, Georgia had a narrow win against inferior FCS foe Nicholls State. Not listed was a loss to an overrated Florida team (that had a terrible offense) and that five of eight wins came on one possession games. This was a solid year for UGA, but there was a struggle.
2007 Alabama Crimson Tide 7-6 (4-4) Nick Saban
Alabama 14 Louisiana Monroe 21
Even the greatest coach of all time struggled in his first year at Alabama. They were shocked by a Sun Belt team, and had five other losses to go with it. Let’s not forget one of the worst FSU teams in the past 30 years beat this Alabama team as well by the same margin. With the struggle, Alabama matched up physically with other SEC teams, so the fan base did not panic.
2018 UCLA Bruins 0-2 (0-0) Chip Kelly
UCLA 17 Cincinnati 26
UCLA 21 Oklahoma 49
Florida State fans were excited when Chip Kelly picked UCLA over Florida. There were some fans nervous that Chip would be the one to turn the ship around. The college football landscape expected UCLA to start lighting up the scoreboard when Chip came to LA. So far UCLA is 0-2, was embarrassed by G5 member Cincinnati and a top five team in Oklahoma. Even in the losses, it isn’t like they are lighting up the scoreboard. It almost seems that Kelly’s fast paced offensive system will take some time as well.
1984 Miami Hurricanes 8-5 Jimmy Johnson
Miami 40 Maryland 42 (Miami was winning 31-0 at halftime)
The best coach in Miami history even had a mediocre year his first season. In 1983 Miami was the national champions of college football, and Jimmy Johnson was inheriting a talented roster. Even with the talent, he managed to mark up five losses, but hiring Johnson paid dividends as he went on to win a lot of games later on.
2001 USC Trojans 6-6 (5-3) Pete Carroll
Technically in the 2001 season there was not a bad loss for Pete Carroll, but his first year came as a struggle. The Trojans started out 2-5, and then finally they started getting it right. The patience with Carroll was well worth it as he won back to back national championships for the Trojans.
