Brigham Young University (BYU) officially joined the prestigious Big 12 conference in an event loaded with pomp and circumstance. This celebration, declared “BYU Big 12 Conference Day” by Utah Governor Spencer Cox, witnessed enormous attendance, including the participation of Tom Holmoe, BYU’s director of athletics.
Holmoe took the opportunity to engage with the media, hinting at significant improvements that need to be made at BYU’s facilities as they brace themselves for this new chapter at Big 12. One such potential project spotlighted was the renovation of Lavell Edwards Stadium.
In an interview, Associate AD Chad Lewis had humorously commented that despite admiration for Lavell Edwards Stadium’s quaint charm, the Big 12 had gently gestured towards making some timely upgrades. Ever agreeing, Holmoe stressed that while BYU has exceptional venues, keeping up with modernization is an inevitable yet gradual process.
BYU won’t rush towards a complete facelift, according to Holmoe. Instead, they would adopt a tactical approach bridging any disparities, ensuring that the essence of BYU’s identity remains unhindered by unnecessary flashiness. For now, the schedule for these amendments remains undetermined. What remains clear, however, is that Lavell Edwards Stadium is poised for a revamp in the future.
Over the last years, the university had taken considerable strides to elevate the stadium’s quality with enhancements like improved video boards, LED ribbons, and an upgraded sound system. The facility, initially constructed in 1964, currently holds a seating capacity of 63,470 owing to additions of luxurious club seating and wheelchair seating. The anticipation of what further upgrades will add matures as BYU embarks on its journey with the Big 12.
