A Deep Dive into Football Statistics
The realm of college football is an intriguing puzzle of statistics and surprises. One might think that a loss should be considered a categorical downfall. However, Brent Venables, head coach of the Sooners, provided a unique perspective at Big 12 Media Day. According to Venables, every loss matters but not all are equal.
The Second Year of the Venables Era
As Coach Venables enters the second year of his leadership, he asserts that the Sooners’ 6-7 record from the previous season isn’t indicative of the team’s true potential. Even though there were bright spots, like Dillon Gabriel topping the league’s passing yardage. However, the defense, under Venables’ guidance, continues to strive for improvement after an uncharacteristic giving up of 30 points per game. There’s room to grow, but the coach believes that not all 7-loss teams are created equally.
Identifying the Difference
While analyzing the losses from the last season, Venables pointed out that the Sooners played many close games that did not favor them ultimately. Some of those games include a narrow loss by three points to West Virginia and a seven-point loss to the Big 12 champions, Kansas State. However, they also suffered a heartbreaking loss by three points to Florida State at the Cheez-It Bowl.
Comparing Losses
Coach Venables went on to draw an analogy to differentiate the types of losses. He compared the Sooners’ losses to those suffered by another team which significantly lost to Florida State and suffered an unexpected loss to Middle Tennessee State. These comparisons strongly pointed towards Miami Hurricanes, who experienced those losses under the leadership of their first-year head coach, Mario Cristobal.
Levels to Losing
Ultimately, the point that Coach Venables was attempting to make is that context matters. Frustrating, close-call losses to powerful teams are different from unexpected blowouts. In other words, there are levels to losing. Each loss constitutes a different story and circumstances, and it’s crucial to look beyond the numbers.
