FQ/CFBHome Team of the Week: Week 5, 2022 — TCU

by Mike Ferguson

In a wild week of college football, 10 AP-ranked teams went down in Week 5. Dealing the largest margin of defeat to a ranked opponent was TCU.

Against No. 18 Oklahoma, the Horned Frogs dominated from the start. TCU led by 17 points after a quarter and never looked back in a 55-24 victory in Fort Worth.

For its domination this week, TCU has earned the distinction of Fifth Quarter/CFBHome Team of the Week:

An Offensive Clinic

The TCU offense just could not be stopped on Saturday. TCU scored 27 first-quarter points, finished with 668 yards of offense and averaged better than eight yards per play.

Quarterback Max Duggan passed for 302 yards, rushed for 116 yards and accounted for five total touchdowns. Duggan threw touchdown passes of 73 yards to Taye Barber and 62 yards to Gunnar Henderson. Duggan also rushed for a 67-yard touchdown. Barber led all receivers with 107 receiving yards on just three catches.

The TCU quarterback was not the only source of big plays for the Horned Frogs. The nation’s active leader in yards per carry, Kendre Miller, finished with 136 yards rushing on just 13 carries and two touchdowns. That included a 69-yard touchdown run.

While the TCU offense dominated, the defense held the Sooners to a season-low 24 points. The 355 yards was also the fewest for Oklahoma in a game this season.

Johnny Hodges was the top tackler for TCU with 10 total stops. Dee Winters finished with two sacks for a TCU defense that tallied four and seven tackles for loss. The Horned Frogs also forced the game’s only turnover.

Poll Changes

Following the win, TCU is 4-0 for the first time since 2017 after winning its Big 12 debut under head coach Sonny Dykes. The Horned Frogs went from unranked to No. 17 in the latest AP Poll.

It marks the first time that TCU has been ranked since a brief 1-week stay at No. 25 in 2019. It is the highest ranking for the Horned Frogs since 2017 when it ranked as high as fourth and finished No. 9.

As for Oklahoma, the loss ended its streak of 31 consecutive weeks in the polls. While TCU went from unranked to No. 17, Oklahoma went from No. 18 to unranked. After a 3-0 start, the Sooners have now lost consecutive games under first-year head coach Brent Venables.
