Peter Warrick Top Moments #8

by | Apr 19, 2018 | ACC, FSU, News

This week for the #8 Top Peter Warrick moment deals with an offensive showdown that college football hadn’t seen before. This moment featured two teams that fit together really well as conference rivals, especially geographically. With the expansion of the ACC, this rivalry has lost its luster some (but that is a different story for a different time). For many older Seminole fans the name Joe Hamilton rings a bell, for the newer ones, you will have a chance to educate yourself.

The Setting

Coming into the glorious 1999 season, there were two favorites in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Those teams were Georgia Tech led by quarterback Joe Hamilton, and Florida State led by receiver Peter Warrick. In 1998 Georgia Tech and Florida State shared the ACC Championship (even though FSU won the head-to-head). Also in 1998 Florida State finished #3 with a national championship apperance and Georgia Tech finished #9 and a Gator Bowl win.

Below you will see a YouTube video for the whole game, in which the announcer made a great point. For Joe Hamilton and Georgia Tech the national championship went through Tallahassee. Joe Hamilton was the runner up for the Heisman in 1999, and Peter Warrick was 6th (both arguably better college players than the actual Heisman winner). The offensive dual they had in this game in 1999 was one for the ages, and mesmerized college football fans everywhere.

The Stats from the Showdown

Peter Warrick

Receptions: 6
Receiving Yards: 82
Rushes: 3
Rushing Yards: 21
Punt Return Yards: 20
Total Yards: 123
Total TDs: 16

#1 Florida State 41 #10 Georgia Tech 35

Florida State’s offense is what won them the game, and showed they deserved the #1 ranking. Florida State scored five offensive touchdowns, and Peter Warrick was responsible for three of them. He scored once from the ground, and two from the air. Some of the clips from this game could be found in his overall highlight tapes, the moves were that good.

On the other end, Joe Hamilton played nearly a perfect game, and if someone did a list on him, this game could be his #1 moment. He only threw three in-completions, over 400 total yards, and was responsible for every Tech touchdown.

All three touchdowns from Peter Warrick played a crucial part in the win, but the last touchdown early in the third quarter put enough separation to outlast Tech in the end. The showdown between Joe Hamilton and Peter Warrick definitely belongs in the top ten moments.
