I am scrolling through all of the FSU social media circles and there seems to be disappointment. With Florida State being a 9-3 team this season the fans thought they deserved a better draw than 6-6 Oklahoma. While Oklahoma barely made bowl eligibility, Seminole fans should be happy to have this game. The Oklahoma Sooners have been an absolute thorn in the side for Florida State throughout history. This Cheez-It Bowl Game should provide opportunity to have fresh success against a team that has been an absolute pain. Especially since FSU looks like they will dominate the game on paper. As we know they play the game for a reason and Florida State has an opportunity to get revenge against Oklahoma.
Everyone knows that Florida State missed out on back to back national championships laying an egg against Oklahoma in 2000-01. The Noles and Sooners would meet in the Orange Bowl to conclude that season for the national championship game. Offensive Coordinator Mark Richt was primarily focused on his new head coaching gig at Georgia. While star WR Snoop Minnis was unable to play. Florida State laid an offensive egg and lost the national championship 13-2.
While just above every Florida State fan knows about the 2000 national championship loss to Oklahoma, not many remember the 1979 circumstance. Florida State under Coach Bobby Bowden finished the regular season undefeated. They entered the bowl season as the #4 AP Team. Back then there was no true national championship game as it was decided to the voters. Not saying it would have happened but if Florida State beats #5 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl there was outside possibilities of being voted for a shared national championship. Of course that did not happen and FSU lost to the Sooners 24-7.
FSU vs. Oklahoma Notes
- Florida State is 1-6 All Time vs Oklahoma.
- Oklahoma has defeated the Noles six consecutive times.
- The two have met in bowl games three different times.
- While the 2011 game was a loss, it was one of the loudest FSU games at Doak Campbell stadium, and signified the Noles were back.
