Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee has his guy at the quarterback position.
Equipped with Little Bites (likely Blueberry) in hand, quarterback Jacurri Brown committed to Miami during a commitment ceremony at his high school on Friday morning. The Lowndes High School (Ga.) product chose Miami over Arizona State, Auburn, Florida, and Texas A&M.
Ranked as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite, Brown is the second commit for Miami’s 2022 class and the first on offense.
“My relationship with Coach Rhett kind of just took off and never stopped doing it,” Brown told Fifth Quarter. “There was just some familiarity with each other. Going down there this past weekend kind of just finalized it for me. Seeing the campus, real nice scenery.”
Brown further explained his relationship with Lashlee.
“It kind of just started off with him advertising Miami,” he said. “And then, it kind of just took off to a whole other level. Pretty much just person-to-person, not even talking about football.”
Recently, Brown took a visit to Coral Gables alongside Isaiah Bond and Colin Hurley. During his visit, Brown met with local officials and Big Brother Big Sister — a local mentorship group.
“Really just met with some officials and people that have a big push towards the youth,” Brown said following his visit last weekend. “Really just met with some people that are trying to better the community and better the city as a whole.”
When Brown arrives on campus, the signal-caller is hoping to do much of the same for the local community.
“Really just giving back to the community, the kids, even adults – the elderly,” Brown said. “I mean just helping that area, that Miami-Dade county area … Really just giving back my time, bless others with the god-given talent I gotten.”
The Fit And Future
On the field, Brown is an electrifying quarterback prospect capable of beating teams in multiple ways. In 2020, Brown totaled 1,537 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air. Brown added 1,101 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns on the ground.
Brown compares himself to “one-third Cam Newton, one-third Kelly Bryant” and when he develops “one-third Deshaun Watson”, and for good reason. At the next level, Brown has game-breaking ability.
Brown will enter Coral Gables with, likely, two underclassmen quarterbacks and a wide-open competition at the position. Although D’Eriq King is expected to start in 2021, Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia will likely be joining Brown for the 2022 season.
“That’s really exciting,” Brown said of the competition. “I love competing. I’m probably the biggest competitor. Just ready to go in there and get ready with these guys, and just compete. They’re all good players; they’re all high-level players. Everyone in college is going to be great.”
Although the spread offense can fit multiple styles of quarterbacks, the offense is one that intrigues Brown.
“Looking at D’Eriq King,” Brown said of the offense. “They just surround everybody around him to maximize his abilities and showcase him as a player, as a thrower and a runner. Just him stepping into that role and centering everything around him really intrigues me.”
