Florida State has been in the ACC since 1992 and is entering their 27th season in ACC competition. When they first entered the league in 1992 there was seven original charter members, and Georgia Tech. In 2004 Miami and Virginia Tech joined, with Boston College hopping in the fun in 2005. Later the need for further expansion would rise in 2013 with Pittsburgh and Syracuse. With Maryland’s departure to the Big Ten, the ACC went proactive and added Louisville in 2014 as the replacement. In the ACC there is two divisions (Atlantic and Coastal) that seem to be set in stone. ACC Commissioner hasn’t done many things right for Florida State, but there is one thing he could fix for all of the ACC.

Divisions and Cross Rivals

Atlantic                                                                                                             Cross Rival

An Easy Swap

Coming into the the ACC was easy work for Florida State going 62-2 in the 90’s in ACC play. One of the favorite ACC away games to attend for Florida State fans was Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Out of all of our ACC mates Georgia Tech is the closest team to Tallahassee. Very quickly Georgia Tech turned into a regional rival for Florida State, and had some competitive games. One of the biggest FSU alumni bases outside of Tallahassee is in Atlanta.

For Georgia Tech, they already have enough troubles filling capacity at Bobby Dodd Stadium (55,000). With Florida State back on the schedule, they would easily bring 15,000-20,000 fans to Atlanta. That would bring 36% needed to fill Bobby Dodd without counting Georgia Tech fans.

In my opinion it would be a great thing to give Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina State, and Wake Forest their regional rival back. Outside of Clemson vs. Florida State, the ACC does not have many games that make great money. Georgia Tech vs. Florida State could potentially boost ratings some.

Speaking of money games it would create a new cross rivalry. If you swapped Georgia Tech and Louisville, then Clemson would lose their cross rival. You could pair them with Virginia Tech yearly, which would create a top tier game similar to FSU vs. Clemson.

The Atlantic Division is already top heavy and it does not seem like it will be ending anytime soon. Since 2011 the ACC Champion has come from the Atlantic, specifically Clemson and Florida State. Sending Louisville over to the Coastal would create more balance and send the Coastal a program that proactively cares for its program.

Louisville would fit in better in the Coastal Division with yearly games with Miami, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech.
