Parity is increasing across football. This year, we are starting to get group of five teams capable of competing with anyone. At the beginning of the season, we had Boise State fight through adversity and derail the Taggart train. Last week, we had Army come within a field goal of defeating a Michigan team that many had slated for the playoffs. It’s a long, crowded competition for the right to a NY6 bowl berth. Right now we have a variety of teams gearing for that spot, so we are here to rank the top five teams.
#1. UCF (2-0)
Year 2 under Josh Heupel, and the Knights are still crushing opponents, despite a new starting quarterback. They did what they were supposed to against FAMU and FAU – CRUSH them. It’s going to be interesting the next two weeks as they face their only Power 5 opponents. To make any impression on the committee, they need to crush Stanford this week, which will end up as a solid Pac-12 team, and crush the defending ACC Coastal Champions, Pittsburgh . Due to their past two seasons, UCF is the only G5 team that has the slightest chance to make the playoffs.
#2. Army (1-1)
Last week, Army held Michigan under 350 offensive yards in the Big House. The problem was the lack of offense in the second half. Ball control and a stiff defense is what will give Army a chance to go 11-1 this season. Army will likely be favored to win every game until they get to Hawaii. Coach Jeff Monken really has something special going on at West Point.
#3. Appalachian State (2-0)
First year head coach Eli Drinkwitz has the Mountaineers rolling, and showing that they haven’t missed a beat. In 2019, they will be the class of the Sun Belt, and will score on everyone. They will have a chance to impress many this week with a game against UNC, and they play South Carolina later in the season.
#4. Boise State
Bryan Harsin is one of the most consistent coaches in the G5. He is very consistent at defeating Power 5 programs, including Florida State this season. True freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier has been impressing many, already throwing for almost 700 yards in two games. Boise State will be favored in all of their remaining games.
Hawaii has a great chance to start 3-0 in Pac-12 play….Wait a minute! Hawaii is in the Mountain West, but they have three Pac-12 opponents to start their season. After defeating Oregon State and Arizona, they look to take advantage of a recently-upset Washington team. Hawaii has the hardest schedule for all of the G5 teams, but their offense can keep up with anyone.
